How to create a shirt that makes you the most money.

Are you considering doing a T-shirt fundraiser to fund your cause/business/charity?  Exciting!

The primary reason for a fundraising campaign is just that, raise funds… and the more the better. A fundamental component of revenue is the profit margin [sales (or donations) minus all expenses divided by revenue]. The key to low profit margins and big revenue is keeping expenses down, both the hard and soft costs.

  • Hard costs: materials and labor expenses pertaining to the creation and running of the fundraiser – such as equipment and supplies, printing costs.
  • Soft costs: expense items not directly associated with creating and running the fundraiser – such as taxes, permits and fees.

If your fundraising campaign involves selling t-shirts the largest hard cost will be the screen printing (of the design onto the shirts). The simplest method to keep printing costs down of your t-shirt fundraiser is limit the amount of colors in the design. Each color in a design adds to the printing cost…the more colors, the higher the printing cost. With 30 years of screen-printing under our belt, Fundraiser Tees can confidently claim that, if done correctly, using 1 or 2 colors can be just as impactful as an 8-color design.

Ideas for low cost, high revenue t-shirts:

Shirt Color

Choose a bright or unique shirt color that can be integrated into the design. Next use 1 or 2-colors, such as black or white ink. If you’re thinking these two ink colors have a reputation of being boring. Think again! When paired with a uniquely colored shirt, black and/or white ink will not only POP and SHINE, they will deliver the most revenue!

Bold Colors

Using bright or neon ink colors printed on a neutral colored shirt results in a t-shirt that really STANDS OUT in a crowd — drawing attention to your cause. You’ll achieve the highest profit margin printing a bold ink color on a light shirt. Another good option would be printing a bold ink color on a contrasting colored shirt. Both are budget friendly without losing the WOW factor.

Half-tones

Adding a gradient or distress pattern to your design can transform a simple design into something extraordinary. Halftone patterns are made of discrete dots (pixels) rather than a continuous color. The pixelation creates a shadowing effect resulting in the illusion of multiple colors — but you’re only charged for printing one color. Win-Win-Win!

Tone-On-Tone

Something beautiful happens when the ink color printed is similar to the t-shirt itself. This tone-on-tone technique works well when you offer only one t-shirt color/style option or a long sleeve and short sleeve shirt version in the same color. The key is to use an ink one shade darker or lighter than the t-shirt to give it a subtle, yet powerful impression.

Simple Designs

Simple designs make the big money. Pair any of the above ideas with a clean, simple design or unique font style and you’ve got a t-shirt everyone wants and is proud to wear!  These are good practices for a successful T-shirt fundraiser.

Bottom line,

don’t be afraid of simple colors and designs. Play around with shirt colors and ink colors and let your imagination go wild!

What We Do

We make the process so easy to sell shirts for charity causes it really sounds to good to be true. We create your custom online store; the store presents your product and your cause and takes orders and payment.  Here is an example.
We then print your shirts and ship them to your customers. Think about it: you do not have to hire a website designer. You do not have to create an online portal to accept paypalcredit card payments. No time is spent on your part collecting the order, guessing quantities of sizes, collecting funds, dispersing the product correctly, etc. etc.
The only thing you have to do is go to your mailbox and get your profit check. To tell you the truth, this is a game changer. If you have ever been put in charge of a t-shirt
order before you know this to be true.

Are you ready to get started?

For those under 35 years of age, we understand: you do not want to talk to a human. That is why we offer an online form to fill out to let us know what you and your
cause is all about. (note: we do not just do fundraisers, we sell tees for any organization and purpose). If you are old school, please contact Mandy, who handles
all things administrative. She will get your questions answered and get you rolling on your free online store. It is truly exciting! See some of our other blog posts about

Perfect For Schools.

One of the biggest gripes we get from our clients who are teachers is the headache they have to endure to raise money for their school or organization.  They get a student to submit art, and since it was drawn with markers or made on a phone app, it is no good for production.  So they have to deal with a grumpy artist (me) to get that going.  Then they have to get permission slips signed and collected.  Then they have to collect everyone’s money.  Then, once the order is completed they have to go over all the orders and hope they dispense the shirts right.  With Fundraiser Tees, all of that goes away.  Now it’s just the parents whipping out their credit card at home (which that is their preferred method any way)…and THAT’S IT.

How To Do a T-Shirt Fundraiser

How To Do a T-Shirt Fundraiser

Thinking of Doing a T-Shirt Fundraiser?

Here are some tips to help you get the best results with your t shirt fundraiser online with the least amount of hassle.

STEP ONE:

Start with a great design

Obviously the best route is to get an experienced graphic designer, especially one who specializes in art for custom t-shirts for a cause. Luckily, we have an experienced in-house artist who can communicate your content in an attractive and relevant fashion. If you have a minute, please peruse his portfolio on our sister site to see his work.

Or, although you may hear a ‘harumph’ escape the lips of the grumpy artist, there are tools online to create your own designs for your t shirt fund raiser. However, although they give you the tools to make a good looking design, more times than not they do not produce production-ready files. What does this mean? It means that the production artist will have to recreate your design to make it ready for production. Essentially the money you save by bypassing the artist is not that much. We strongly recommend using our Online Design Studio. Not only is it powerful with tons of whistles and bells (templates, extensive clipart library), it makes files that are good to go. No extra work needed.
This can save you a bundle.

We will boldly suggest here that if you are not a creative person, go ahead and spend the money on the artist. If the tee is not exciting, frankly, no one will buy it.

Here are some good rules:
1) Go with large and bold graphics. Tees sold online do not have the luxury of subtlety.
2) Make your design elements and color choices match your message. Skulls and crossbones do not work on a Girl Scout Cookie campaign. Pink t-shirts are a no-no for a motorcycle club. Nudity may not be the best choice for a family reunion design.
3) If color is not your strongpoint, use online color tools to create an attractive palette.

STEP 2:

Print the shirts.

Since your goal is to raise money for your favorite cause or to supplement your income, do not do business with a retailer. Not that their quality and customer service could not be excellent, it’s just their overhead requires a heftier price tag. It’s best to go with a wholesale screen printer. Here at Fundraiser Tees we are the printer.  We have a fully loaded production warehouse and no work is jobbed out. We feel we are one of the best fundraising t shirt companies out there because printing custom t-shirts is what we do.

STEP 3:

Create an online store.

This is where the rubber hits the road. If you have had any experience in getting a website created, especially one that can do commerce (such as securely accepting credit cards)
you know that this can be very expensive. And tedious. Let us toot our own horn here by saying not only do we make fully-functional t shirt campaign websites uniquely tailored towards selling tshirts (see example), we can make one for you Free. That is not a typo.

Easy!

STEP 4

Arrange for shipping

Although there are several companies out there, we recommend FedEx first and then UPS to ship your campaign’s tshirts. To explain the reasons why would be another blog post.

Doin’ It For The Kids:

The Cooper Life Fund is a non-profit organization raising money to aid children and families of children born with heart defects and other serious medical conditions.  Their annual 5k fundraiser was unfortunately postponed until next year due to Covid-19 so we hooked them up with a store on Fundraiser Tees in order to still earn funds.  The store sold 30 shirts and we were able to mail the organizers a great profit check!  Easy Breezy!
